The purpose of Upward Sports Ministries is to fulfill God’s vision by promoting:

Salvation – To share the love of Jesus Christ with everyone involved in an Upward ministry.
Character – To help every child grow as Jesus did – spiritually, physically, mentally, and socially.
Self-Esteem – To help every child grow in their understanding and enjoyment of sports.

Upward Sports is a first-class sports experience for children that emphasizes healthy competition, sportsmanship, skills building and fun versus the “win-at-all-costs” mentality associated with many sports leagues. Rules unique to Upward Sports—including game format, substitution system and rules for play—are designed to provide the best sports experience for every child. On top of equipping children with sport fundamentals needed to participate at the next level, some distinctive features to Upward Sports are:

1. Each child is evaluated before the team selection process to create balanced teams that are competitive.
2. Upward Sports utilizes a unique substitution system which guarantees every child equal playing time.
3. Upward Sports aims to teach both athletic skill as well as values for success on and off the playing field/court.
4. Upward Sports prioritizes a family friendly schedule by conducting one-hour practices and games each week.
5. With supportive coaches and a positive sports environment, Upward Sports is designed to bring out “the winner” in every child regardless of the game’s score.

New Associate Pastor Aaron Carter

Pastor Aaron Carter

Meet our New Associate Pastor Rev. Aaron Carter!

We are so excited to announce that Bishop Schnase and the cabinet have appointed Rev. Aaron Carter as the new associate pastor of Gruene! Members of the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) were pleased to meet him on May 2nd.  What a great guy!

Pastor Aaron was born in San Antonio and is one of five children to Stanley and Toni McKinney.  He lived in San Antonio until he was thirteen, when he moved to Moore, Oklahoma following a parental job change.  After graduating from Mid-Del Christian School, Pastor Aaron went on to attend Rose State College on a basketball scholarship.  He earned another athletic scholarship to continue playing basketball at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas where his peers voted him team captain.  He graduated in May of 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

Pastor Aaron prepared for full time pastoral ministry by attending the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta Georgia.  In May of 2010 he earned his Masters of Divinity degree with a concentration in Church and Community Leadership.  While a student, Pastor Aaron served at Victory For The World Church as both an executive assistant to the Pastor and Youth Minister.  After that, he became the Youth and Young Adult Pastor at Fifth Street Missionary Baptist Church in Oklahoma City where he organized their youth ministry.  While serving at Fifth Street Min. Carter was ordained into the Gospel Ministry.

Following a call upon his life, Pastor Aaron took a leap of faith and moved to New York City to serve God.  During his time in New York, he ministered at Grace Congregational Church in Harlem, Ecclesia Churches of New York in Harlem, and Graffiti 2 Ministries in the Bronx.   Once back in San Antonio, Rev. Carter received opportunities to minister in his childhood church, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.

As things began to shift theologically, Pastor Aaron began his candidacy in the United Methodist Church.  Pastor Aaron is currently serving as an Associate Pastor at St. Paul United Methodist Church where Rev. James Amerson is the Pastor and he will begin the formal process to be ordained in the United Methodist Church at this annual conference in June.

And…he proposed to his fiancée this weekend…and she said yes!  We all look forward to welcoming him as he arrives to Gruene on July 2.

With God’s love,

The Staff Parish Relations Committee:

Stephen Stokinger (chair), Joel Freeman (lay leader), Joanie Scott, Lonnie Bane, Claudia Woods, Becky Harrell

New Pastor Appointed to Gruene UMC

Rev. Dan Harrington

We are so excited to announce that Bishop Schnase and the cabinet have appointed Rev. Dan Harrington as the new senior pastor of Gruene!  His first Sunday will be July 2nd, so we will want everyone to come and welcome him.

Dan has just the right heart and “vibe” for Gruene…and his passion for Jesus oozes out of him!  We know he will be perfect for this place.  Dan is married to Maria and they have three children: Lyla (7), Jonah (5), and Jesse (3).  He currently serves as associate pastor of Northern Hills UMC, located on Loop 1604 in northeastern San Antonio, where he has primary responsibility for preaching and leading that church’s contemporary worship service. He is a musician (whoohoo!), having pursued a previous career as a singer/songwriter and performing under the stage name of “Foscoe Jones.”

Recognizing the unique nature of Gruene and how important this transition is, the bishop has asked Pastor Karen to continue serving the church in a limited role during the initial months of this transition.  At his request, she will take primary responsibility for leading the church’s upcoming capital funds campaign to reduce debt and will also oversee Pastor Brock’s residency with Path 1.  Bishop Schnase expressed his gratitude for Karen’s willingness to take on these responsibilities at Gruene as she begins her full-time duties starting new faith communities and revitalizing existing churches throughout the Rio Texas Conference.

We are excited that Pastor Karen can finish the things that are important to her and that the church will be able to welcome Pastor Dan and his family soon!  It’s the best of both worlds…God is so good!  If you have any questions you are welcome to talk to anyone on the Staff Parish Relations Team or Pastor Karen
